Your Central Basin Walleye Fishing Report

Covering Huron, Vermilion, Lorain, Cleveland, Fairport Harbor, Geneva, Ashtabula and Conneaut Ohio, and Erie, PA Waters and Canadian Waters of Lake Erie

June 2, 1999
Lorain area
Went fishing sat. off lorain. pulled 11, most 2-6lbs. one 30in. Most on
boards, 30 jets back 120-150.  Only 2 fish off boards? That's hard to
believe. Good fishing.

Lorain Harbor  area
Fished out of Lorain Harbor Saturday May 29, 1999
Pulled 10 walleyes 2 to 5 lbs.  on dipsies, great weather but hard day
fishing.
Lots and lots of marks, but fish hanging closes to bottom.
Plenty of fish out there, will really be great when things pick up.

May 30, 1999
Rocky River area
Went out 5/29/99 from Rocky River.  In 36' of water, near the first
marker buoy east, caught plenty of perch with several jumbos (12").
Caught about as many gobies and a couple of sheephead. I  never thought
I'd see the day when a sheephead was welcome, but they sure beat those
ugly little gobies.  Let's all be sure to crush those suckers before we
throw them back in the water.  They are a nuisance fish, they are not
indigenous to Lake Erie and they compete with the prized gamefish of
Lake Erie (perch, walleye) for habitat and food.  SHOW THE GOBIES NO
MERCY !

Who has all the Lake Erie shiners ?  All the bait shops are calling the
larger "river chubs", "shiners" and it ain't so.  The larger minnows
(chubs) give the perch a chance to pull them off without taking the
hook.  Word of advice to you perch fishermen forced to use chubs: The
larger minnows also make the "bite" harder to detect requiring you to
wait for several "taps" before trying for a hook set.

May 30, 1999
Lorain/Crib area
Sunday May 30th. Fished North of the crib in 53 to 57 ft. of water, caught 5
nice walleyes. All fish were caught early. The most productive aproach was a
fire tiger Thunder stick with 3 oz. weight. Picked a few off the Dipsies with
a blueberry muffin Stinger, the downriggers were quiet. Hope for a better
report tomorrow.

Rocky River  area
Thanks for the tip on Rocky River. Went perch fishing Sunday about mile off
mouth of river in 36' of water. Caught limit of perch, three large sheephead,
large amount of gobbies, and for a bonus, a 32" walley all on minnows and
spreder off bottom. Tried trolling for about hour with small spoons,
wormharness, as well as plugs and only got some sheephead. Great outing. The
only problem was cleaning all those perch. Such problems should happen all
the time. Am going out to Lake Ontario for Salmon this weekend. Thanks again

" WetnWild" from Grand River Marine rack storage
May 14    arrived at the Ruggles reef  for some smallmouth fishing but found the lake to be in pretty bad
condition.  After some good advice from some locals we
headed down to Lorain to fish behind the break walls.  We took 15 smallmouth from 12 to 18 inches on tubes
and crankbaits.  Most were caught in 13 to 18 feet of water.  Despite getting a good soakin we had a good
day.
                  PS   I appreciate the reports.

The lighthouse on the mouth of the Cuyahoga River has produced the nicest
perch I have seen in years at a consistant rate. Pulled limits of 11"-14"
steadily. 99% were males or already spawned females. 35ft. of water all
around area on the bottom with spreader and minnows. Patience needed? Alot of
gobies.
The late night after dark walleye fishing of the rocks and trolling slow or
casting stick baites and cranks. Large eyes in ther feeding from 72nd to
Edgewater.

May 10, 1999
Central Basin, Vermilion Area
Went Walleye fishing Saterday May 9th about one mile North, Nortwest of
Vermilion River, had a good SW wind in the A.M.  Cought one fish with gold
Erie Derie, could only fish for two hours but there are fish in the area now!
Water was clear but had engine trouble, cut the day very short. I'm
confident fishing will pick up in this area this week and my engine shall be
fixed!  I'll let ya know how I do this week.

May 3, 1999
Central Basin, Lorain Avon Area
My daughter and I went off of Lorain on May 1, 1999.  The wind had blown
hard from the N.E. for 3 or 4 days, so fishing was slow.  But, we saw many
medium and large walleye on the finder north of the harbor in 50 feet of
water.  Just outside the harbor,  we caught many Gobis and only 4 perch --
but of those four, three were 12 inches long, so I think the jumbo perch
are in and just waiting for weather they like better.  The lake was clear
about 1/2 mile out of the harbor, but muddy further in.

Central Basin, Lorain Avon Area
Perch are biting off Lorain and Avon from 33' to 55' water. Crappie rigs with emeralds are banging limits of
fish. Bonus walleyes, big eyes are in this school. Hit 2 over 8 pounds on perch rigs, and missed 4 others.
After limiting on perch went to vertical jigging tactics. A cecada 3/4 oz gold/org triggered a monster after 2
jerks. Water was looking great this past wed. and should be good this weekend. Look for bait, you'll find the
fish.

Good Luck:

Central Basin Streams
Steelhead are still being caught in the Chagrin and Grand Rivers.  High river conditions from the rains have slowed the steelhead fishing.  Anglers are catching steelies with spawn sacs, jigs and maggots, jigs and minnows and also powerbaits.  Anglers are also catching walleye in the grand river on jigs.  Historically, this is the time when fishing for steelheads will begin to slow down in the rivers.

April 9, 1999
Central Basin Streams
Central basin rivers (Chagrin, Rocky River, and Grand) are in good condition for steelhead fishing.  Waters have cleared up
from 1 inch of rain.  Anglers are catching steelhead with spawn sacs, jigs with minnows, jigs and maggots, and power baits.

April 3, 1999
Central Basin Streams
Steelhead trout fishing on central basin tributaries has been great the past two weeks with many spawning steelhead in the streams.  Anglers have been successful on the Chagrin, Rocky River, Grand Rivers, as well as Conneaut Creek.  Anglers are using spawn sacks, jigs tippedwith maggots and jigs tipped with minnows.

February 4th, 1999
Central Basin Area

Continued warm weather and rains have have all but finished what little ice-fishing there was this year on Erie.  There were only
a few good days of it earlier this winter.

In the central basin, continuted high water as a result of heavy rains have prevented steelhead fishing activity on eastern LakeErie tributaries.
Why not take in a Sport Show or two, while we patiently wait for better weather.

 Central Basin Area
Ice fisherman only got in a few days of good fishing before the recent rains warm weather shutdown the ice-fishing.   However
there are still several weeks of winter to follow.  Just have to see what the weather does.

In the central basin, ice-jams and high water have prevented steelhead fishing activity on eastern Lake Erie tributaries.  This
should change in the next few days as some of the smaller tributaries should be fishable.  The steelhead will be moving into
                                     shallower runs for spawning.
